In 1819 the Groningen merchant Meindest Niemeijer married the bookseller's daughter Cornelia Johanna Reinders. In the same year the family business was founded, initially under the name Het Wapen van Rotterdam after the former hostel, which now housed the grocery store. Theodorus was born as the first son in 1822. In 1848 he took over his parents' business, which mainly sold luxury goods: various sorts of tobacco , cigars , coffee beans, chocolate as well as genever, brandy and liqueur. Although there was great competition from a total of 28 tobacco manufacturers in Groningen, Niemeijer increasingly concentrated on tobacco production and trade. In 1891 Niemeyer had a large packing house and in 1904 a new factory building built in Groningen. In addition to pipe and snuff , the company's product range also included shag and cigars, but coffee and tea were also traded. From 1909 cigarette production was added. After Niemeijer's death in 1910, his son Albert Willem (1867–1950) took over the family business, which continued under the name Theodorus Niemeijer.

Theodorus Niemeijer lost his first wife Alida Cazemir in 1849, a few weeks after the birth of their child. Two years later he married Tettje Heckman, with whom he had ten more children. His grave is at the Moscowa burial site in Arnhem.

Theodorus Niemeyer BV

In the first half of the 20th century, Niemeyer BV gradually eliminated all local competitors. During the Great Depression, tobacco production stopped, so the company concentrated on the coffee and tea trade. During the Second World War it shifted to the production of tea and coffee substitutes and was thus able to bridge the period of tobacco rationing. In the decades after the war, the tobacco industry benefited from the positive image of cigarette smoking , including Niemeyer BV. On the occasion of the company's 150th anniversary in 1969, the company was awarded the Koninklijk title . The Niemeijer family provided the company's directors until 1979. In 1990 Niemeyer BV became part of the Rothmans group of companies and in 1999 was finally merged into British American Tobacco (BAT) Benelux.
