Theodorus Schrevelius (also Dirk Schrevel) (born July 25, 1572 in Haarlem / Netherlands; † December 3, 1649 in Leiden / Netherlands) was a humanist , author and poet .

Life

Theodorus Schrevelus had studied philology at the University of Leiden since January 28, 1591 and worked 1600–1624 as headmaster in Haarlem. 1607-1618 he sat on the city council. Towards the end of this time, as a result of the resolutions of the Dordrecht Synod, the dispute over the doctrine of predestination broke out among the Reformed . Theodorus took the party of the “ Remonstrants ” or “Arminians”, who at the synod had represented a milder view of this doctrine and were therefore excluded from the synod as well as from public offices. So the rector had to leave his office.

Theodorus turned to Leiden and found his living as a tutor there. In 1625, however, he was appointed rector of the Leiden Latin School, where he was able to work until 1641.

His chronicle "HARLEMIAS", the first Dutch edition of which appeared in 1648, became very well known. In addition to this work, numerous other books have been written by him in Dutch and Latin. He also became known for a portrait that the painter Frans Hals , the founder of Dutch baroque painting, had made of him in 1617 and that was initially in the Musée du Luxembourg, Paris, and has been on view in the Frans Hals Museum in Haarlem since 2003 is. Schrevelius Strasse in Haarlem is named after him.

Theodorus had been married to Maria (also: Marijcke) van Teylingen since 1599 and had seven children, including the later classical philologist Cornelius Schrevelius .
