Theun de Vries (born April 26, 1907 in Veenwouden, Friesland , † January 21, 2005 in Amsterdam ) was a Dutch resistance fighter , writer , poet and politician .,

His best-known work is the novel The Girl with Red Hair from 1956 (made into a film by Ben Verbong in 1981 under the title Het meisje met het rode hair ) about the resistance fighter Hannie Schaft .

Theun de Vries was a member of the Communist Party of the Netherlands (CPN), for which he sat on the Amsterdam City Council .

Life

De Vries attended a general school . From 1921 he wrote publications in youth and Sunday newspapers. In 1925 he made his literary debut with "Friese say" (Frisian sagas). From 1929 to 1937 he worked as a library employee. In 1931 his debut novel came out with a Rembrandt novel. From 1936 to 1971 he was a member of the Communist Party of the Netherlands. Theun was active in the resistance against the German occupation of the Netherlands from 1940 to 1945 and was interned in the Amersfoort police transit camp from 1944 to 1945 . After his beginnings in poetry, he wrote traditionally realistic fiction prose with a socialist tendency. In many cases he also worked as a translator. He also wrote historical studies, including on heretics .
