This Is the Modern World is the second studio album by the British mod rock band The Jam . It was published by Polydor on November 18, 1977 .

Background information

The album was created in the same year as their debut album In the City , with Vic Smith and Chris Parry again responsible for production. Much of the songs on the album were written by Paul Weller , the group's guitarist and singer. Only the pieces London Traffic and Don't Tell Them You're Sane are from bassist Bruce Foxton . The piece In the Street Today was written by Weller and Dave Waller, In the Midnight Hour is a Wilson Pickett -Cover.

In advance, the single The Modern World was decoupled from the album on October 15, 1977 , along with live recordings of the pieces Back in My Arms Again and Sweet Soul Music , which comes from Arthur Conley , as B-sides. The Modern World reached number 36 on the British charts, the album This Is the Modern World number 22.

The reviews of the album This Is the Modern World were mixed. Chris Woodstra from Allmusic complained that This Is The Modern World looks pale in contrast to the debut, and contains many immature ideas, although Paul Weller incorporated a lot of personal experience into the songwriting. Other critics also noted that The Jam did not adopt a new sound on their second album.
