In the City is the debut album by the British mod rock band The Jam , which was released in May 1977 by Polydor . The album is under the influence of numerous British rock protagonists such as The Who or The Kinks , who significantly influenced the band's music. The released single In the City reached number 40 on the British charts , the album itself reached number 20 on the charts.

Emergence

After the group had received a recording deal with Polydor in February 1977, the twelve tracks for the debut album were recorded in March 1977 in the Polydor recording studios on Stratford Place in London under the direction of record producers Vic Smith and Chris Parry. The title song was released as a pre-single on April 29, 1977 with the track Takin 'My Love, also on the album, on the B-side. Drummer Rick Buckler recalled the recordings in his autobiography That's Entertainment: My Life in the Jam from May 2015:

“The actual recording was easy because we already had some recording experience and were well rehearsed. We played the songs live and then did overdubs. "

“The actual recordings were easy because we already had some experience with them and were well rehearsed. We played the songs live and then added overdubs to them . "

Almost all of the tracks on the album were written by the band frontman Paul Weller , only the Batman theme was written by Neal Hefti , while Slow Down was written by Larry Williams . The album was released on May 20, 1977 and received good reviews in the British music press.

reception

Chris Woodstra says at allmusic that The Jam's debut album strikes a good balance between the destructive aggression of punk music and the awe of beat music and rhythm and blues . Samir H. Köck notes in the Austrian daily newspaper Die Presse that the album offered energetic music, stylistically wandering between sixties R&B, soul, mod rock and punk .
