Thoman Burgkmair

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Thoman (Thomas) Burgkmair (* around 1444 in Augsburg ; † 1523 ibid) was a painter of the late Middle Ages in Augsburg. He was listed there as a painter in the guild books of the Augsburg painters' guild . He is the father of Hans Burgkmair the elder .

Thoman Burgkmair is assigned a few pictures at the end of the Gothic and beginning of the Renaissance , some of which are often cited as sources for understanding this epoch in Augsburg or beyond.

Significance for Augsburg painting and its painters' guild

Thomas Burgkmair: Christ carrying the cross

After his marriage to the daughter of an Augsburg sculptor in 1469, Thoman Burgkmair became a member of the Augsburg painters' guild, which also included the carvers, glaziers and goldsmiths. It was probably he who “wrote beautifully” the first Augsburg painter's book and who recorded the names of the artists who lived in the city around 1470. The book is in the Augsburg city archive today.

Thomas Burgkmair is considered by some art historians, together with the master of the Ilsung Madonna and the master of 1477, to be one of the most important and formative painters of the Augsburg late Gothic period. Even if others only recognize Thomas Burgkmair as an “average artist” in comparison to his son Hans, his influence and his respected role in the Augsburg painters' guild is generally recognized.

Father of Hans Burgkmair

Thoman Burgkmair is the father of Hans Burgkmair the Elder (* 1473), who also worked as a painter, draftsman and wood cutter in Augsburg at the beginning of the 16th century and is known as the most important Augsburg artist between the late Gothic and Renaissance periods. Hans was probably first as an apprentice to his father.

Works (selection of the attributed paintings)

Like almost all other artists of his era, Thoman Burgkmair did not sign his works. An attribution is therefore difficult and sometimes controversial. Above all, his portraits are a visible source of understanding his era in Augsburg or the conditions in the Fugger family.
