Thomas Anthony Harris

Thomas Anthony Harris (born April 18, 1910 in San Antonio , Texas , † May 6, 1995 in Sacramento , California ) was an American psychiatrist and author .

Life

Harris attended high school in San Antonio. He then studied medicine and received his bachelor's degree from the University of Arkansas Medical School in 1938 . In 1942 he began his psychiatric training at St. Elizabeth's Hospital in Washington, DC Harris then served as a psychiatrist in the US Navy . He became the chief physician of the mental health service at the Marine Hospital in Philadelphia. In 1947 he took over the management of the Psychiatric Department of the Office of Medicine and Surgery in the Navy Department.

He left the military in 1954 with the rank of frigate captain . After that departure, Harris received a teaching position in psychiatry at the University of Arkansas . Following his teaching career, Harris was appointed director of the Washington State Department of Institutions. In this position he was responsible for the care programs in the penal system and in the sanatoriums. In 1956 Harris settled in Sacramento , California, as a psychiatrist .

Since 1960 Thomas A. Harris has been one of Eric Berne's closest collaborators . Harris collaborated with Harry Stack Sullivan and Frieda Fromm-Reichmann . In the publication I´m ok - You´re ok. , which appeared in 1963, Harris summarizes the medical experience he gained over twenty-five years of employment.

Harris was the director of the International Association for Transactional Analysis founded by his mentor Eric Berne , and the founder and president of the Institute for Transactional Analysis in Sacramento.

Thomas A. Harris was married to the journalist and editor Amy Bjork Harris (* 1929).
