Thomas Bénatouïl

Thomas Bénatouïl (* 1972 ) is a French historian of philosophy .

Bénatouïl studied from 1992 to 1999 at the École normal supérieure (rue d'Ulm) . In 1993 he obtained a license in philosophy from the University of Paris IV and in English ( University of Paris III ), in 1994 the maîtrise in philosophy from the University of Paris IV. In 1995 he passed the agrégation in philosophy. In 1996 he obtained a Diplôme d'études approfondies in sociology from the École des hautes études en sciences sociales, and in 1997 a DEA in philosophy from the Université Paris X Nanterre . From 1997 to 1998 he was a visiting student (Procter Fellow) at Princeton University . From 1998 to 2002 he worked on a dissertation entitled La Pratique du stoïcisme: recherche sur la notion d'usage (khrésis) de Zénon à Marc Aurèle with Carlos Levy at the Université Paris XII-Val de Marne .

From 2003 to 2013 he was Maître de conférences in Philosophy at the University of Nancy II . In 2012 he obtained his habilitation à diriger des recherches with a work Ars quaedam philosophiae: une histoire pratique de la connaissance dans les écoles philosophiques antiques (sagesse, sciences, theôria) also from Carlos Levy. Since 2013 he has been a professor in the Department of Philosophy of the Faculté des Humanités of the University of Lille III, teaching ancient philosophy .

His main research interests are stoicism , skepticism , Epicureanism as well as Plato and the academy (from Speusippos to Cicero ) and contemporary French philosophy.

Since 2015 he has been co-editor of the magazine Philosophie antique .
