Thomas Börner (born May 27, 1951 in Döbeln ) is a former German football player. Between 1973 and 1981 he played in the GDR Oberliga , the top division in GDR football , for BSG Stahl Riesa .

Athletic career

Before Thomas Börner came to the company sports club (BSG) Stahl Riesa, he played with TSG Meißen in the third-class district league Dresden until 1972 . At the time of his change, Stahl Riesa had just been relegated from the league and was playing in the second-rate GDR league . With the participation of 1.82 m tall striker Börner, who played eight games of the 22 league games and was used seven times in the eight promotion games, the BSG Stahl returned to the league after a year. In the following three league seasons Börner was always a regular player, he was missing only nine matches. In the 1976/77 season he could only be used from the twelfth game day and completed only ten league games by the end of the season. Riesa was relegated again, and Börner found his way back to his old level in the GDR league. In the 22 league games he was used nineteen times, scored thirteen goals and also played all eight promotion games, in which he scored two more goals. So he was significantly involved in the recovery. In the league season 1978/79 he was back with 22 appearances as a striker, but had several breaks due to injuries in the two subsequent seasons and could only be used 33 times in a total of 52 league games. In 1981 Börner was relegated with Stahl Riesa for the second time and then played his last season in higher-class football. He showed himself in the GDR league season 1981/82 once again from his reliable side, because he was missing only one point game, scored five goals and was also in all eight promotion games, in which Riesa, however, missed promotion. After the end of his competitive sports career, he was able to point to 136 league appearances, in which he had scored 23 goals. In the GDR league he played 48 times and scored 19 goals. As a recreational footballer, Börner played for several years with the BSG Empor Mühlberg in the Cottbus district league .

In 2014, Thomas Börner and other former soccer players were appointed honorary members of the Stahl Riesa ball sports association, the successor to the Stahl company sports association.
