Thomas Brand Hollis
Thomas Brand Hollis (* 1719 as Thomas Brand ; † September 9, 1804 ) was a British businessman and collector.
Thomas Brand's parents were dissenters (deviants from the Anglican Church of England ) from Ingatestone . After visiting the Inner Temple and the Queens' College of the University of Cambridge from 1735 Thomas Brand studied from 1738 to 1741 at Glasgow University .
Brand had a lifelong friendship with Thomas Hollis , a radical political thinker. Both traveled to Europe together from 1748 to 1750. When Hollis died in 1774, he bequeathed extensive property to Thomas Brand on condition that the latter take his name. Since then this has been called Thomas Brand Hollis . Brand Hollis was a member of the Essex Street group , a cradle of Unitarianism in England. He represented pro-American and Reformation positions and was friends with Joseph Priestley and Richard Price .
In 1756 Brand became a member of the Royal Society . In 1774 Brand won a seat in the Parliament of the United Kingdom , but through bribery, so that his election was annulled in February 1775. Together with Richard Smith he received a fine of 1,000 marks for electoral fraud and was imprisoned for six months. No votes or speeches are documented from Brand Hollis' time as a parliamentarian. In 1782 he was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences . The Harvard College awarded him with the LL. D. a doctorate.
Brand wasn't married. He died on September 9, 1804. He was buried in Ingatestone .
