Thomas Butler (born December 8, 1871 in Woodstown , Ireland , † August 20, 1928 in Northwich ) was a British tug of war .

biography

At the age of four, Thomas Butler and his family moved to Wirral . He worked as a police constable in Runcorn , Hartford and Birkenhead before he later rose to sergeant where he worked in Ellesmere Port . As Superintendent of Police he was later stationed in Dukinfield near Manchester . Butler was a member of the Liverpool City Police's tug-of-war team at the 1908 Olympics . They won their first competition against the United States. After the Americans lost their first train, they protested the Liverpoolers' shoes. However, this was rejected, which is why the Americans withdrew from the competition. In the semifinals, Liverpool defeated the Swedes and advanced to the final. There the team was defeated by the City of London Police team and thus won silver.
