The focus of his research is the question of how organisms, together with their colonizing microorganisms, have developed into a multi-organismic unit in the course of evolution. The long-term goal is to develop improved treatment options for a wide range of serious diseases whose common cause is a dysfunctional relationship between the body and bacteria.

He appears as editor of the international journal "Zoology" and participates in numerous national and international university, academy and specialist commissions. Bosch has had a close relationship with the University of St. Petersburg for decades .
