Thomas Clere

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Sir Thomas Clere (* before 1530 ; † April 14, 1545 ) was an English poet at the court of King Henry VIII. He is mentioned in some poems by Henry Howard, Earl of Surrey , with whom he was a close friend.

Life

Thomas Clere was the third son of Sir Robert Clere, landlord of Ormesby St Margaret in Norfolk , and his wife Alice, daughter of William Boleyn . Since Alice was the sister of Thomas Boleyn, 1st Earl of Wiltshire and thus the aunt of Anne Boleyn , Thomas Clere was the cousin of this. On May 11, 1544 he was promoted to Knight Bachelor . He became engaged to Mary Shelton, a former mistress of Henry VIII, in 1545, but died before he could marry her.

Thomas Clere was buried in Surrey . A plaque honoring him is attached at this point. His brother Edward Clere was killed in the Battle of Pinkie Cleugh .
