Thomas Delavall

Thomas Delavall (* 1620 in London , England , † July 1682 in New York City , Province of New York ) was mayor of New York City three times between 1666 and 1679.

The spelling of his last name varies in some sources. Sometimes the name is also spelled Delaval or DeLavall . He was born in London in 1620 and first came to America in 1664. There he joined Richard Nicolls , who then conquered the Dutch colony Nieuw Nederland including the city of Nieuw Amsterdam for England. Delavall became a prominent citizen of what was now called New York City. He also acquired real estate and houses in both the City of New York and the Province of New York. There he also held a few offices. Among other things, he worked as a judge. At times he was part of the council of the colonial governor. In 1666–67, 1675–76 and 1678–79 he held the office of Mayor of New York City. After a temporary Dutch return in 1673, his property was confiscated and he was forced to leave the city. After the English returned, he got his property back. He died in New York City in July 1682.
