Cornelius Van Steenwyk was born as Cornelis Jacobsz Steenwijck. His name is sometimes given as Cornelis Steenwijck , Cornelius Steenwyk , or Van Steenwy . The sources about him are not very productive. He was a Dutch trader in the province and city of New York. He was one of the richest men in this area. Between 1668 and 1671 and again from 1682 to 1684, although Dutch, he held the office of Mayor of New York City. In the meantime he was also formally governor of the Dutch colony of Acadia in 1676. In fact, the area in northern Maine was not in Dutch hands and Steenwyk could only make a theoretical claim to the governorship. In 1678, with the Peace of Nijmegen , the theoretical Dutch claim to the area was given up.
