Thomas Finlay

Thomas Aloysius Finlay (born September 17, 1922 - December 3, 2017 ) was an Irish politician of the Fine Gael and Chief Justice of the Supreme Court .

biography

After attending school, he studied law and worked as a Barrister-at-Law after completing his studies . In 1954 he was elected as a candidate for Fine Gael to the deputy ( Teachta Dála ) of the lower house ( Dáil Éireann ) and represented in this until his electoral defeat in 1957 the constituency of Dublin South-Central .

On October 10, 1972, he was appointed judge of the High Court , the highest civil and criminal court in Ireland. He was its president between 1974 and 1985.

In 1985 he was appointed Chief Justice of the Supreme Court. Thomas A. Finlay held this position until 1994.

Most recently, as a former Chief Justice, he was a member of the Council of State ( Comhairle Stáit ) , an advisory body to the Irish President . Finlay died in December 2017 at the age of 95.
