John L. Murray (lawyer)

John Loyola Murray (* 17th June 1943 in Limerick , County Limerick ) is an Irish judge , two-time Attorney General (Attorney General of Ireland), long-time judge at the European Court of Justice : He was from 2004 to 2011 Chief Justice of Ireland Chief Justice of Supreme Court .

Life

After attending Crescent College and Rockwell College , he studied law at University College Dublin and at King's Inns . During his studies he was an active member of the student body and was twice elected President of the Union of Students of Ireland. After being admitted to the bar in 1967, he practiced as a lawyer and was appointed Senior Counsel in 1981 when he was appointed to the Inner Bar .

In August 1982 he became the first Attorney General of Ireland, although he only held this office until December 1982. He then resumed his private practice as a lawyer before he was again attorney general from March 1987 to September 1991.

After completing this activity, he was appointed judge at the European Court of Justice (ECJ) in 1991 and remained there until 1999. During this time, he was also visiting professor at the Summer School of Georgetown University at the Ruprecht-Karls-Universität Heidelberg from 1994 to 2002 as well as at the University of Florence . In addition, between 1997 and 2000 he was visiting professor for European law at the Université catholique de Louvain and in 1998 visiting professor for human rights at the University of Aix-Marseille .

After finishing his work as a judge at the European Court of Justice, he was appointed judge at the Supreme Court in 1999. During this time he was also chairman of the anti- fraud committee of the European Central Bank (ECB) between 2000 and 2003 .

From 23 July 2004 to 2011 was John L. Murray Chief Justice of Ireland and Chief Justice of the Supreme Court. Due to this, he was after the Constitution of Ireland and a member of the State Council ( Comhairle Stait ) and the Presidential Commission ( Coimisiún na hUachtaránachta ) . In addition, from 2004 to 2007 he was chairman of the European Commission's ad hoc committee on ethics .

He has received numerous awards for his achievements and, in addition to the Grand Cross of the Order of Merit of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg, was awarded an honorary doctorate in law from the University of Limerick in 1993 and from the New England School of Law in Boston in 2003 .
