Thomas H. Kolbe

Thomas Heinrich Kolbe (* 1968 ) is a German geoinformatics scientist and has been a professor of geoinformatics at the Technical University of Munich since 2012 .

Life

After graduating from high school at Hittorf-Gymnasium in Recklinghausen , Thomas H. Kolbe studied computer science with a minor in electrical engineering at the University of Dortmund from 1988 to 1993 . He received his diploma with the final grade "very good". He then did research as a research assistant at the Institute for Computer Science III at the University of Bonn and, from 1997, at the Institute for Environmental Sciences at the University of Vechta , where two years later he was awarded a Dr. rer. nat. received his doctorate . He then became a research assistant at Bonn University and, in 2004, senior engineer at the Institute for Cartography and Geoinformation . In 2006 he was given the chair in " Geoinformation Technology Methodology" at the Institute for Geodesy and Geoinformation Technology at the Technical University of Berlin and from 2009 was also director of the institute. Finally, in 2012 followed reputation at the Department of Geoinformatics at the Institute for Geodesy, Geoinformation and Land Management of the Technical University of Munich. In 2016/17 Kolbe was visiting professor at the Faculty of Architecture and the Built Environment at the Technical University of Delft in the Netherlands .

From 2008 to 2012 he was Vice President of the German Society for Photogrammetry, Remote Sensing and Geoinformation and then its President until 2016. In 2013 he took over the chairmanship of the "Round Table GIS " association.

Kolbe's research area is the development of methods for modeling, storage, analysis and visualization of the environment. The focus is on virtual 3D city and landscape models, smart cities , 3D geodatabases and interior navigation. Kolbe was the initiator and co-author of the City Geography Markup Language .
