Thomas Hauser (born February 27, 1946 in New York City ) is an American writer and journalist. He is best known for his 1978 published book The Execution of Charles Horman , which he was nominated for the Pulitzer Prize earned and as a template for the Palme d'Or winning feature film Missing served. In 1991 he also received the William Hill Sports Book of the Year Award for his biography of Muhammad Ali .

Life

Thomas Hauser was born in New York City on February 27, 1946. In the 1960s, he studied there law at Columbia University . He successfully completed this degree in 1970 and then worked from 1971 to 1977 as a lawyer for the law firm Cravath, Swaine & Moore .

As part of this activity, Thomas Hauser represented clients on several occasions in lawsuits against government agencies or employees, including working for Arthur and Doris Krause, whose daughter Allison was killed in the Kent State massacre in 1970. Thomas Hauser then came into contact through mutual acquaintances with Ed Horman, the government employee suspected of having been indirectly involved in the murder of his son Charles during the coup in Chile . Thomas Hauser advised Ed Horman against filing a lawsuit, as this would probably drag on for years and would have little chance of success. Instead, he suggested that he write a book about the case. Ed Horman initially refused, but later gave his consent after three and a half years of unsuccessful legal proceedings. Thomas Hauser then took a leave of absence from his law firm to work on the book. He published it in January 1978 under the title The Execution of Charles Horman (later called Missing ). His debut as a writer earned him Pulitzer Prize and National Book Award nominations and was successfully filmed in 1982. Thomas Hauser has been a full-time writer and journalist ever since.

Thomas Hauser published over 37 books and wrote numerous articles for newspapers and Internet media, including the New York Sun and SecondsOut.com. He was initially known for his first work, especially after it was made into a film. He later made a name for himself as a boxing expert by publishing numerous books and articles on boxing. In 1988 he and the physician Robert Peter Gale wrote a book about his personal experience as head of a medical team in Chernobyl . The book was published in 1989 under the title Chernobyl: The Final Warning and filmed in 1991 under the same name with Jon Voight and Jason Robards in the leading roles.

Missing

The Execution of Charles Horman describes the background and circumstances of the arrest and subsequent murder of the American Charles Horman during the coup in Chile. The involvement of American authorities in the coup in Chile is highlighted and also the struggle that his wife Joyce and father Edmund waged with uncooperative Chilean and American authorities to clarify his fate. After the initially unexplained disappearance of his son, Edmund Horman fled to Chile in 1973 to help his daughter-in-law Joyce in the search for his son.

Boxing

Thomas Hauser has made a name for himself as a boxing expert since the 1990s . He has published a number of books on boxing, including several books on Muhammad Ali. For his book Muhammad Ali: His Life and Times , published in 1991 , he received the William Hill Sports Book of the Year Award . In addition to his books, Thomas Hauser also wrote numerous articles and columns on boxing topics and appeared as an expert in various film documentaries. In 2005 he received the Nat Fleischer Award for career excellence in boxing journalism for his work as a journalist .
