from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Thomas Hummel (* 1962 ) is a German composer, music computer scientist and sound director. He lives and works in Freiburg im Breisgau .

Life

Thomas Hummel studied composition a. a. with Klaus Huber and Mathias Spahlinger in Cologne and Freiburg. Between 1992 and 1994 he was invited as a composer at IRCAM (Paris). Since 1994 he has been working as a sound director and music IT specialist at the EXPERIMENTALSTUDIO of the SWR in Freiburg. There he is engaged in research and composition work in the field of instrumental mixed sound and database composition.

Create

His range of works ranges from solo pieces to orchestral works using electronic media. His compositions have been performed by well-known ensembles, including a. Ensemble Court-Circuit , Holst-Sinfonietta , Ensemble SurPlus , Kairos Quartet and the Stuttgart Radio Symphony Orchestra performed and broadcast internationally on the radio.

Thomas Hummel's specialty is speech sound composition. These are instrumental works whose orchestrations simulate speech phonemes sonically. Elaborate computer calculations are used to gradually optimize the appropriate orchestration with the help of sound databases.

Since 2006 Thomas Hummel has been working on what he claims to be the world's largest sound database for the contemporary orchestra, "conTimbre". conTimbre contains more than 86,000 sampled sounds and more than 4,000 timbres from over 150 orchestral instruments, which can be used for realizing contemporary scores and for algorithmic orchestration using the integrated sample player ("ePlayer").

In addition to a number of other composers from the field of new music (such as Emmanuel Nunes , Alwynne Pritchard , Roberto Rusconi , Johannes Kreidler , Moritz Eggert ), Thomas Hummel himself uses virtual instruments from databases such as conTimbre or the "Virtual Orchestra", which he also developed his instrumental compositions. The resulting works are characterized by different tonal shades - from conventional, physical musical instruments to instruments ideally reproduced by loudspeakers to purely virtual sampler instruments.

Awards and publications

Thomas Hummel received composition prizes a. a. at the Villa Concordia in Bamberg and at the Musikprotokoll Graz (as part of the Styrian Autumn Festival ) as well as grants from the German National Academic Foundation , the DAAD and the Helene Rosenberg Foundation . He followed teaching assignments at the Albert Ludwig University of Freiburg and the State University of Design Karlsruhe (HfG) . Publications were made with MusikTexte , Dissonances , Pfau Verlag and Bärenreiter . His composition "Aus Trachila" was released on CD in 2008 by NEOS Music .
