The Holst-Sinfonietta is a chamber orchestra for music of the 20th and 21st centuries based in Freiburg im Breisgau . The orchestra is named after the English composer Gustav Holst (1874–1934).

history

The Holst- Sinfonietta was founded in 1996 by its conductor and artistic director Klaus Simon with the aim of performing selected works from the music of the 20th and 21st centuries in an ensemble format. Internationally staffed, the Holst-Sinfonietta is made up of 16 professional instrumentalists plus their own sound engineer. The ensemble's sponsoring association is the non-profit Holst-Sinfonietta e. V. based in Denzlingen.

With premieres of works by contemporary composers such as John Adams , Joseph Schwantner , Erkki-Sven Tüür , HK Gruber , Mark-Anthony Turnage and Michael Torke , the Holst-Sinfonietta was able to distinguish itself as a specialist ensemble for newer to the latest music . Stylistically not tied to a specific school or tradition, its musical spectrum encompasses both European art music from the beginning of the 20th century and the contemporary Anglo-American avant-garde of the 20th and 21st centuries. Her repertoire ranges from Klaus Simon's own arrangements of Gustav Mahler's 1st and 4th symphonies for chamber ensemble to the works of the Second Viennese School ( Arnold Schönberg , Alban Berg ) and American minimal music ( Steve Reich , John Adams, Terry Riley ) towards more recent works, etc. a. by Steven Mackey , Jennifer Higdon and Frederic Rzewski .

Since 1999 radio recordings have been made for the stations SWR 2 , BR-Klassik and the Swiss radio DRS 2 as well as CD recordings for the labels Neos , Naxos , Spektrum , cpo and Ars Musici , etc. a. with works by Alban Berg , Erich Wolfgang Korngold , John Adams and Joseph Schwantner .

In 2008 the Holst-Sinfonietta made its debut at the Center for Art and Media in Karlsruhe with the world premiere of Thomas Hummels Aus Trachila for speakers and a large ensemble, which was released as a CD recording by Neos that same year. In coproduction with Bayerischer Rundfunk , a CD production with the title Pierrot Cabaretaire with works by Arnold Schönberg ( Pierrot Lunaire ), Benjamin Britten and Friedrich Hollaender was most recently made , which was published at the end of 2010 and received a positive response from music critics.
