Thomas Hyde
Thomas Hyde (born June 29, 1636 in Billingsley near Bridgnorth , Shropshire , † February 18, 1703 in Oxford ) was an English orientalist and linguist . The first mention of the word dualism goes back to him.
His father, who was the rector, taught him knowledge of the Near Eastern languages at an early age . At the age of sixteen he began studying at King's College , Cambridge with Abraham Wheelock . His rapid progress in understanding Arabic, Persian and Syrian texts enabled him to work under Brian Walton on an edition of the Polyglot Bible .
As a chess historian, Hyde appeared in 1689 with the book Historia shailudii , which is considered the first scientific chess history book .
In 1691 he succeeded Edward Pococke as Laudian Professor of Arabic, a major professor of Arabic at Oxford University , and in 1697 took over Roger Altham's place as Regius Professor of Hebrew .
