Brian Walton (theologian)

Brian Walton (* around 1600 in Cleveland, ( Yorkshire ), † November 29, 1661 in London ) was a British theologian, orientalist , Bishop of Chester and editor of the London Polyglot .

Life

Walton began his studies at Magdalene College in Cambridge in 1614 . In 1618 he moved to Peterhouse College in Cambridge, where he was ordained a priest in 1623. Also in 1623 he received his Magister Artium , in 1639 he received his doctorate . From 1654 to 1657 he worked as editor of the Biblia Sacra Polyglotta (also called "London Polyglotte"), a synopsis in six volumes on subscription basis . The work includes scriptures in nine languages: Hebrew , Aramaic , Samaritan , Syriac , Arabic , Persian , Old Ethiopian , Greek and Latin . The polyglot was created with the collaboration of the authors James Ussher , John Lightfoot , Edward Pococke , Edmund Castell , Abraham Wheelocke, Patrick Young, Thomas Hyde and Thomas Greaves.
