politics

Jürgewitz joined the Junge Union . In 1984 he left the CDU . In 2003 he was in the Schill party for a few months . From 2010 he was politically active in the Cuxhaven district board of the Free Voters . He ran for a district council mandate for the FDP and the Free Voters . In 2013 he joined the newly founded AfD Bremen and was elected deputy spokesman for the Bremen state board.

He was the top candidate of the AfD for the 2015 general election in Bremerhaven. After a decision by the election review court on December 21, 2015, according to which the AfD in Bremerhaven was affected by counting mishaps, he should have moved into the Bremen citizenship instead of the SPD politician Petra Jäschke ; this decision was overturned by the Bremen State Court , as the inconsistencies in the counting were not relevant to the mandate.

In the general election in Bremen 2019 , he moved into the state parliament on list number 1 in Bremerhaven. In June 2019, the AfD parliamentary group elected Jürgewitz as its chairman. In August 2019, he gave a speech during a citizenship meeting, which he had largely taken over from a right-wing blog - without marking the quotes. With this he violated the rules of procedure of the citizenship.

Until the end of September 2019, Jürgewitz was deputy chairman of the Bremen state association of the AfD , which the constitution protection declared in January 2019 to be a "test case". According to a report by the Weser-Kurier, one reason for this should be positive statements by Thomas Jürgewitz about the Identitarian Movement (IB). Among other things, Jürgewitz said: “The IB uses intelligent, funny, non-violent actions to draw attention to grievances in Germany, which, however, displease the do - gooders. Because the IB wants to preserve the German identity. "

In May 2020, Jürgewitz described communism as the top of all crimes of mankind in a citizenship speech . Green MP Henrike Müller then announced that he would have it checked whether the statement was a criminal relativization of the Holocaust .
