Thomas John Hennen (born August 17, 1952 in Albany , Georgia ) is a retired American astronaut .

Since 1973, Hennen worked in various military reconnaissance units in the United States Army . From 1981 he also developed systems for military reconnaissance from space.

Astronaut activity

In September 1988 CWO-4 (Main Ensign) Hennen was selected by the US Army as a payload specialist candidate and trained for the so-called Terra Scout program from March 1989. In August he was appointed payload specialist for the STS-44 mission and began astronaut training at NASA in 1990.

STS-44

On November 24, 1991, Hennen started as a payload specialist on the space shuttle Atlantis for the STS-44 mission . It was a mission for the US Department of Defense . The non-secret payload contained, among other military experiments, a DSP satellite and its upper stage engine to lift the satellite into higher orbit.

In December 1995, Hennen retired from the Army and has since worked as managing director of the Atlantis Foundation, which he co-founded.
