Thomas Karlauf
Thomas Karlauf (born January 17, 1955 in Offenbach am Main ) is a German author.
Life
Two months after graduation went Karlauf in August 1974 after Amsterdam and became a member of in the 1940s by Wolfgang Frommel founded, operated as a foundation Stefan-George -Kreises Castrum Peregrini . He lived in the foundation's house at 401 Herengracht until 1984 and initially trained as a publishing clerk at the group's magazine, also called Castrum Peregrini and published by Manuel R. Goldschmidt. He was later editor of the magazine and published a number of articles there, including Castrum Peregrini in 1981 . In 1984 Karlauf moved to Berlin and worked as a publishing editor, initially at Siedler Verlag , where he was responsible for the autobiographies of Bruno Kreisky and Franz Josef Strauss as a ghostwriter , and later at Rowohlt Verlag Berlin.
He has been a freelance author since 1996 and runs a literature agency in Berlin-Halensee . After publishing a wine guide and working as a ghostwriter on Eberhard von Brauchitsch's memoir, he returned to the topic of Stefan George. After seven years of work, his George biography Stefan George was published in 2007 . The discovery of the charism , which was largely appreciatively reviewed. Karlauf was lecturer and final editor of the research volume The Office and the Past , which was presented in October 2010 by the Independent Commission of Historians to review the history of the Foreign Office during the Nazi era and in the Federal Republic .
In 2016 Karlauf published a biography about Helmut Schmidt . According to the Süddeutsche Zeitung , he succeeded relatively well in keeping the distance necessary for a historian, despite all the sympathy for his protagonist.
Karlauf's book Stauffenberg: Portrait of an Assassin sparked a debate about Claus Schenk Graf von Stauffenberg even before it was published . The book received various reviews. The attempt to research Stauffenberg's motifs and the style were rated positively; It was critically noted that there were no substantiations for essential allegations and that Stauffenberg's actions were derived solely from his George supporters.
