Eberhard von Brauchitsch

Joachim Albrecht Eberhard Kurt Konrad Ferdinand von Brauchitsch (born November 28, 1926 in Berlin ; † September 7, 2010 in Zurich ) was a German manager . He was the managing director of Flick KG and one of the main participants in the Flick affair . Most recently he worked as a management consultant and lawyer .

He came from the old Silesian noble family of the von Brauchitsch . His father Konrad (Kunz) von Brauchitsch (1890–1947) was initially a frigate captain and since at least 1934 in Berlin archive director of the Reichsschallarchiv of the Reichs-Rundfunk-Gesellschaft . His mother Edith de la Barre (1895-1975) came from a noble Silesian family.

Brauchitsch married on August 23, 1952 in Mainz the doctor Helga Hempe (born December 3, 1926 in Leck (North Friesland) , † September 7, 2010), the daughter of bailiff Hans-Joachim Hempe and Selma Musaeus. The couple had three daughters and one son († 2016). Brauchitsch last lived with his wife in Mettmann .

Life

Brauchitsch first attended high school in Berlin. In 1943 he was relocated with Friedrich Karl Flick to the Flick'sche Landgut Sauersberg and attended a school in Bad Tölz with him. In 1943 he served as a flak helper in Munich, graduated from high school in 1944 and was called up for military service. In 1946 he made up his Abitur in Bad Tölz and worked for a short time as a journalist. He studied law in Mainz and, after completing his legal traineeship, received a scholarship from the Amsterdam University of Political Science; He also attended the London School of Economics and studied at the Academy for International Law in The Hague. He was politically active with the Young European Federalists . He passed the Great State Examination in 1954 at the Berlin Court of Appeal.

He began his professional career in Berlin as a lawyer, later he also worked in Cologne, Frankfurt / Main and Düsseldorf. In 1955 he was hired by Deutsche Lufthansa and worked for the legal department. In 1957 he was appointed managing director of Deutsche Flugdienst GmbH .

From 1960 he worked for the Flick Group, initially as Friedrich Karl Flicks personal advisor. In 1965 he became a managing partner of the Flick Group. From 1971 to 1973 he was the general representative of the publisher Axel Springer and deputy chairman of the supervisory board of the Axel Springer publishing house in Berlin. In 1973 he went back to the Flick concern and left it again after the party donation scandal in 1982, which later became known as the Flick affair . On February 16, 1987, the Bonn Regional Court sentenced Eberhard von Brauchitsch to two years' imprisonment for tax evasion and aiding and abetting in tax evasion, which was suspended on probation against a fine of 550,000 DM.

He then worked as a management consultant and lawyer. From February 1991 to 1999 he was a member of the board of directors of Kuehne + Nagel . From 1994 he was, among other things, chairman of the supervisory board of the East German chemical company Buna-Werke .

Sports

In the 1970s, Brauchitsch was deputy chairman of the German Sports Aid Foundation . For his services in business and sport, Federal President Walter Scheel awarded him the Federal Cross of Merit, First Class, in 1977 .

On September 7, 2010, the seriously ill Brauchitsch and his wife, who was also seriously ill, with whom he had been married for almost 60 years, took their own lives with the help of the Swiss euthanasia organization " Exit ".
