Tom Kirkwood

Thomas Burton Loram Kirkwood CBE (born July 6, 1951 in Durban , South Africa ) is a British biologist and gerontologist .

Career

Kirkwood studied biology and mathematics at Cambridge and Oxford . From 1981 to 1993 he worked at the National Institute for Medical Research . In 1993 he became Britain's first professor of biogerontology at the University of Manchester . In 1999 he was appointed to Newcastle University . There he is co-director of the Institute for Aging and Health and head of the gerontology department.

Work areas

Kirkwood has been involved in gerontology since 1975. In 1977 he set up the disposable soma theory as a model for the evolution of aging .

In 2009, Kirkwood became Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE). In 2011 he received the Longevity Prize from the IPSEN Foundation .
