Thomas Kistner

Thomas Kistner (* 1958 in Karlsruhe ) is a German sports editor for the Süddeutsche Zeitung , who is best known for investigative articles on the darker side of sport, such as doping and corruption (“the bad conscience of German sports journalism ”).

After studying politics in Heidelberg , he started at the Badener Zeitung , later switched to the Münchner Abendzeitung and finally to the Süddeutsche Zeitung, where he is responsible for sports policy .

After being elected Sports Journalist of the Year 2006, he received the Theodor Wolff Prize in 2008 for the article Spritzensport Fußball (Süddeutsche Zeitung Magazin) .

Among the non-fiction books that he has been writing since the late 1990s, the criminal history of the largest sports association FIFA stands out under the title FIFA Mafia . Christof Siemes wrote in the weekly newspaper Die Zeit : "Since the book Fifa-Mafia was published, there can be no more doubt that the leadership of the world football association is turning one crooked thing after another in its mysterious headquarters above the city of Zurich." It received the prize for the 2012 Football Book of the Year from the German Academy for Football Culture .

In 2018 he drew attention to himself as a critic of DFB President Reinhard Grindel . He called Grindel "a lightweight in sports politics".
