Thomas Münzel (* 1955 in Baden-Baden ) is a German doctor. Since 2004 he has been Professor of Cardiology and Angiology at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz and Medical Director of the 2nd Medical Clinic and Polyclinic of the University Medical Center at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz .

Live and act

Thomas Münzel studied medicine at the University of Freiburg from 1979 to 1985 after training as a nurse and working for several years in this profession . In 1985 he received his doctorate in Freiburg. As part of a grant from the German Society for Cardiology (DGK), he worked at the Institute for Applied Physiology (Prof. E. Bassenge) at the University of Freiburg from 1985 to 1987, then from 1988 to 1993 as a research assistant. With a habilitation grant from the German Research Foundation (DFG), he went to the Department of Cardiology at DG Harrison at Emory University in Atlanta, USA, from 1993 to 1995 . In 1995 he completed his habilitation at the University of Freiburg and from 1995 to 2004 he worked in the Department of Medicine III, Cardiology, at the University Medical Center Hamburg-Eppendorf . There he initially worked as a senior physician, then from 2003 as a professor of internal medicine. In 2004 Münzel was offered a chair for internal medicine at the Mainz University Medical Center and became director of the 2nd Medical Clinic and Polyclinic for Cardiology, Angiology and Internal Intensive Care Medicine. Münzel is a member of the board of the Mainz Heart Foundation and co-initiator of the Gutenberg Heart Study and was Scientific Director of the newly founded Center for Thrombosis and Hemostasis (CTH) at the Mainz University Medical Center in 2010. Thomas Münzel has been responsible for the certification process for the German Chest Pain Units (CPU) since 2009. As of March 2014, almost 200 CPUs have been certified. Clinically, his focus is on diagnostics and therapy, and in particular on the interventional treatment of stable coronary heart disease and acute myocardial infarction. Other focal points are the diagnosis and therapy of heart failure; Treatment of high blood pressure and anticoagulation for patients with atrial fibrillation.

research

In his scientific work, Thomas Münzel is primarily concerned with the causes of atherosclerosis and the mechanisms why the body quickly gets used to organic nitrates when given chronically (subject of nitrate tolerance). A large number of cardiovascular diseases are associated with an increased production of reactive oxygen species (e.g. superoxide radical), which are both causally and indirectly / secondarily involved in the pathogenesis of the disease. For hypertension, hyperlipidemia, smoking and diabetes mellitus, increased vascular oxidative stress in connection with a deterioration in endothelial function could be demonstrated. The latest scientific focus is so-called noise effects research, i. H. Research into the effects of aircraft noise in particular on endothelial function, a clinically important parameter of the early stages of atherosclerosis, can indicate and, more importantly, has prognostic significance. The most important original work on this was published in the European Heart Journal 2013 (Schmidt et al. 2013: European Heart Journal doi : 10.1093 / eurheartj / eht269 ) Easily accessible overviews on these topics are provided by the English-language papers (endothelial function: Münzel Annals of Med 2007; nitrate tolerance: Münzel Circulation 2011; Nitrate tolerance: Münzel European Heart Journal 2013).
