Thomas Meyer (doctor)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Thomas Meyer (* 1967 in Berlin ) is a German neurologist and entrepreneur. After studying medicine at the Humboldt University in Berlin (1988 to 1996) and training as a specialist in neurology, he specialized in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). In 2002 he founded the outpatient clinic for ALS and other motor neuron diseases at the Charité .

From 2004 to 2007 he was the treating neurologist of Jörg Immendorff , who suffered from ALS and supported the research work at the Charité with the “Immendorff grant for ALS therapy research” by auctioning his own works of art. Meyer's role in Immendorff's disease phase is described in the film portrait Ich, Immendorff by Nicola Graef and in the Immendorff biography by Hans Peter Riegel . Immendorff and Meyer shared the effort to bring the rare disease of ALS to public awareness. In 2004 he inspired Christoph Schlingensief to thematize the ALS in the theater production "Art & Vegetables - Theater ALS Disease", which was staged at the Volksbühne on Rosa-Luxemburg-Platz and nominated for the 42nd Berlin Theatertreffen in 2005. In 2007 Meyer received an adjunct professorship at the Charité. From 2008 to 2012 his work was funded by the “ Air Berlin Fund for ALS Research at the Charité”, which was founded by Joachim Hunold .

Meyer has been leading various research projects on managed care at ALS since 2011 , which are financed by the “Help for people with ALS” initiative. This initiative under the patronage of Gerhard Schröder was initiated by Jürgen Großmann , the supporters from politics ( Klaus Theo Schröder , Ulla Schmidt , Detlef Prinz ), science ( Karl Max Einhäupl , Jörg Hacker , Bettina Schöne-Seifert ) and art ( Anselm Kiefer , Markus Lüpertz ).

In March 2011, Meyer and the neurologist Christoph Münch founded the Internet portal AmbulanzPartner, with which the outpatient treatment of complex and serious diseases is coordinated.
