Thomas Stalker Butler (born November 4, 1855 in Uwchlan , Chester County , Pennsylvania , †  May 26, 1928 in Washington, DC ) was an American politician . Between 1897 and 1928 he represented the state of Pennsylvania in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Thomas Butler attended his home public schools, West Chester State Normal School and Wyer's Academy in West Chester . After a subsequent law degree and his admission as a lawyer in 1877, he began to work in West Chester in this profession. In 1888 he was a judge in the 15th Judicial District of Pennsylvania. Politically, he became a member of the Republican Party . In June 1892 he took part as a delegate at the Republican National Convention in Minneapolis , at which President Benjamin Harrison was nominated for re-election, which was then unsuccessful.

In the congressional election of 1896 Butler was elected as an independent Republican in the sixth constituency of Pennsylvania to the US House of Representatives in Washington, where he succeeded John Buchanan Robinson on March 4, 1897 . After 15 re-elections as a candidate for the Republican Party, he could remain in Congress until his death on May 26, 1928 . From 1905 to 1911 he chaired the Committee on Pacific Railroads and from 1919 until his death he was chairman of the Committee on Naval Affairs. He also changed constituencies twice while serving as a congressman. Until 1903 he represented the sixth, then from 1903 to 1923 the seventh and then the eighth district of his state. During his time in the US House of Representatives, the Spanish-American War of 1898 and the First World War took place . Between 1913 and 1920, the 16th , 17th , 18th and 19th amendments were ratified.

Thomas Butler was the father of Smedley D. Butler (1881-1940), who became a highly decorated major general in the United States Marine Corps .
