James Wolfenden

James Paine Wolfenden (born July 25, 1889 in Cardington , Delaware County , Pennsylvania , †  April 8, 1949 in Philadelphia , Pennsylvania) was an American politician . Between 1928 and 1947 he represented the state of Pennsylvania in the US House of Representatives .

Career

James Wolfenden attended Friend's Central School and Penn Charter Academy in Philadelphia. He then worked in the family's own business processing cotton and new wool. He also served as vice president of Citizen's Bank of East Lansdowne and the Delaware County Hospital . At the same time he embarked on a political career as a member of the Republican Party . Within his party he held a number of regional offices. Among other things, he was a member of the party executive in Delaware County. He served as the Mayor of Upper Darby for nine years .

After the death of MP Thomas S. Butler , Wolfenden was elected as his successor to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC when he was due for the by-election for the eighth seat of Pennsylvania , where he took up his new mandate on November 6, 1928. After nine re-elections, he could remain in Congress until January 3, 1947 . Since 1945 he represented the seventh constituency of his state there. During his time in Congress, the New Deal laws of the Roosevelt government were passed there, which Wolfenden's party was rather hostile to. In 1935 the provisions of the 20th Amendment to the Constitution were applied for the first time , according to which the legislative period of the Congress ends or begins on January 3rd. Since 1941, the work of the Congress was also shaped by the events of the Second World War and its consequences.

In February 1946, Wolfenden announced that he would not stand for another congressional candidacy. On May 23 of the same year, he was seriously injured in a fire on a ship while on vacation in Ocean City . His left foot was permanently damaged. Wolfenden did not recover from the consequences of this accident. As a result, his health deteriorated. He died in a Philadelphia hospital on April 8, 1949.
