Charles Lewis Gerlach (born September 14, 1895 in Bethlehem , Pennsylvania , †  May 5, 1947 in Allentown , Pennsylvania) was an American politician . Between 1939 and 1947 he represented the state of Pennsylvania in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Charles Gerlach attended public schools in his home country. In 1914 he moved to Allentown. He founded a company that traded in fuel and spare parts for heating, and then became its president. At the same time he embarked on a political career as a member of the Republican Party . In 1936 and 1937 he was a member of the state executive committee of his party.

In the 1938 congressional elections , Gerlach was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the ninth constituency of Pennsylvania , where he succeeded Democrat Oliver W. Frey on January 3, 1939 . After four re-elections, he could remain in Congress until his death on May 5, 1947 . Since 1945 he represented the eighth district of his state there. During his time in Congress, the Roosevelt government passed the last New Deal laws until 1941 , which Gerlach's party was rather hostile to. Since 1941, the work of the Congress was also shaped by the events of the Second World War and its consequences.
