Thomas Sauer (organist)

Thomas Sauer ( Tomaš Žur in Upper Sorbian ; * 1954 in Wittichenau ) is a German church musician . From 1978 to 2020 he was the cathedral organist at St. Hedwig's Cathedral in Berlin.

Thomas Sauer grew up in Storcha in Upper Lusatia in a Sorbian family. After early training at the Bautzen Music School and with a nun in the St. Marienstern Monastery , he studied at the Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy University of Music in Leipzig, where the Thomas organist Hannes Kästner was his teacher.

As a graduate, he took up his first position as organist at Berlin's St. Hedwig's Cathedral in September 1978. He took over the service of the Klais organ , inaugurated in January of the same year , with which the reconstruction of the war-torn cathedral was completed. In 1990 he received the title of cathedral organist . Before St. Hedwig's Cathedral was closed for the planned renovation and dismantling of the Klais organ, Thomas Sauer gave a last concert in the cathedral at the beginning of September 2018 and then held his office until he retired on March 1, 2020 the alternative church of St. Joseph in Berlin-Wedding .

In addition to his liturgical duties and organ concerts at the cathedral, he worked with the choirs of St. Hedwig's Cathedral , was involved in radio and vinyl recordings and was invited to concert tours in various European countries and the United States. With his wife Roswitha, he developed formats that combine organ music and poetry, such as the series of words like music since 2008 .
