geography

The place is located about twelve kilometers northwest of the large district town of Bautzen . Storcha lies at 202  m above sea level. NHN and thus about 40 meters above the valley floor of the black water , which flows past to the east. Therefore, the place can be seen early when coming from the east.

population

In 1925 Storcha had 92 inhabitants, 79 of whom were Catholic and 13 Protestant. The Catholic parish of Storcha today includes 30 villages and a branch church in Schmochtitz .

For his statistics on the Sorbian population in Upper Lusatia, Arnošt Muka determined a population of 89 inhabitants in the 1880s; among them were 88 Sorbs (99%) and 1 German. In 1956 Ernst Tschernik counted a Sorbian-speaking population of 70.9% in the municipality of Storcha (with Dreikretscham, Zscharnitz and the already more strongly Germanized Passditz). Sorbian is spoken in Storcha to this day.

Origin of name

The German place name is a translation of the Sorbian name - baćon means " stork ". Until the 17th century, only modified forms of the old place name were used in German, such as Bathin or Baten . In 1658 the name Storcha appears for the first time. As recently as 1884, the name Pathen was recorded in the measuring table sheets.

history

The place on Via Regia is first mentioned as Batin in 1380 . From 1777 on there is a manor in the village.

Until January 1, 1962, Storcha formed an independent rural community with the villages of Dreikretscham and Paßditz, Liebon and Zscharnitz (Gem. Paßditz) incorporated in 1936 . Then the community first came to Prischwitz , with which it was incorporated into Göda on March 1, 1994.

Culture and sights

The old school from 1888

In Storcha there is the neo-Gothic parish church Herz Jesu ( Cyrkej Jězusoweje wutroby ), which is visible from afar and which was decided to build in 1869 on the initiative of the Sorbian-Catholic Cyrill Methodius Association . The foundation stone was laid in 1870. Since the income from the Sunday collection could not be used for financing and there was hardly any support from outside the Sorbian Lusatia, the church was built by the Catholic Sorbs almost single-handedly. At the same time, they continued to donate for various construction projects outside of the Sorbian area. In contrast, a collection of the catholic Dresdner Volkszeitung for church building came together just six Reichsmarks. In 1887 the church was finally completed despite all the adversities. The dimensions of the church (41 × 17 m, tower height 49 m) and its imposing architectural style have allowed it to dominate the area around the village ever since.

The place has also been the station of the annual Easter Riding since 1892 . The Radibor- Storcha route is one of six traditional routes.
