Thomas Schmiecher (born April 15, 1960 ) is a former German soccer player who was active in the 1980s for FC Carl Zeiss Jena and BSG Sachsenring Zwickau in the GDR Oberliga , the top division of GDR soccer .

Athletic career

Thomas Schmiecher played his first supraregional men's games at the age of 18 with the company sports association (BSG) Wismut Gera in the 1978/79 season. When relegated from the Oberliga he was used in twelve of the 22 GDR league games . He was in the starting line-up in nine games, played mainly in midfield and scored a goal. 1979/80 he was called up 15 times in the league point games, but coach Matthias Heymann did not find a regular position for Schmiecher, so that he had to constantly commute between midfield and defense. As the season winner, the BSG Wismut participated in the promotion games to the league, but failed as 4th out of five applicants. Schmiecher was used six times in the eight games. In the 1980/81 season Schmiecher completed only four point games in the first half of the season, as he was drafted into the National People's Army in November 1980 for military service . After his release, Schmiecher returned to Wismut Gera at the beginning of the 1982/83 season and only missed one league game. Again, the Geraer played for the league promotion, but missed it again. Schmiecher played seven of the eight qualifying games. Under the new coach Hans Speth , Schmiecher had now found his regular position as a libero . On this he was replaced by Michael Klammt in the 1983/84 season, first playing in midfield and later in central defense.

For the 1984/85 season Thomas Schmiecher moved to the upper division club FC Carl Zeiss Jena, the football focus in the GDR district of Gera . Under coach Dietmar Pfeifer , Schmiecher was initially not used in the top division. It was only when Pfeifer was replaced by Lothar Kurbjuweit after five game days that Schmiecher got his chance and was called up in 15 league games by the end of the season. But he played again in changing positions as a defender and midfielder. In the match of the 13th match day between FCC and Dynamo Dresden (4-0) he scored his only top division goal with the goal to make it 1-0. In addition, he came to nine missions in the GDR league team FCC II, in which he also scored a goal. For the 1985/86 season, FC Carl Zeiss continued to plan with Schmiecher in the major league, but he only played in nine league games there, but in the second team 14 times in 34 league games. 1986/87 Schmiecher should be used in the league as a midfielder, in fact he was only called up from the 9th to the 13th league match day in the defense. In contrast, he was a regular player in the 2nd team of the FCC with 23 appearances.

Due to the lack of a league perspective, FC Carl Zeiss Jena parted ways with Thomas Schmiecher in the summer of 1987. This moved to the GDR league club Sachsenring Zwickau. There he was used as a defender in 32 of the 34 league games and scored one goal. He was thus significantly involved in the Zwickau's rise to the league. However, Schmiecher again failed to assert himself in the top division, as a defender he played only seven of the thirteen league games at irregular intervals until the winter break. He then ended competitive sport after 36 league games with one goal and 151 GDR league games (4 goals) and continued his footballing career as a recreational athlete with the third-class BSG Elektronik Gera .
