Thomas Steiner (born October 25, 1956 in Wels ) is an Austrian painter and video artist .

Life

Steiner lives in Linz . His fields of work are experimental single-image film, video and painting. He studied art education at the Linz University of Art and Design. After completing his studies in 1986, he attended the University of Applied Arts Vienna in the master class Maria Lassnig . In 1979 he was a founding member of the Linz City Workshop .

Steiner has been participating in international film festivals since 1984, and since 1990 he has shown his paintings in solo exhibitions and at exhibitions at home and abroad.

Steiner is a member of the Upper Austrian Art Association , the Wiener Künstlerhaus (since 2001) and ASIFA Austria .

Thomas Steiner's works, which include drawing , painting , film and video , are characterized by exploring the interrelationships between the various media. Artistic processes develop at the interface between static and moving images.

His work develops in series, each dedicated to a visual theme. By closely interlinking cinematic and painterly strategies, Thomas Steiner turns seeing into an experiment, dismantling and alienating the visual perception of the world.

Works by him are in the possession of the cities of Linz and Wels, the Strabag Art Forum, the Lentos , in the art collection of the State of Upper Austria, the BKA and the Albertina as well as in private collections.

He took part in symposia and worked in Bangalore , Moscow / Alferjewo, Eger , Paliano , Malo and Mexico and took part in film festivals at home and abroad.

Awards

Thomas Steiner has received several prizes and awards, including a. 1996 the Upper Austrian regional culture award for experimental film and the 1st prize in the art competition of Bau-Holding Klagenfurt. In 2005 he was nominated for the SWR Media Art Prize.
