Thomas Sunn Pedersen

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Thomas Sunn Pedersen (* 1970 in Roskilde ) is a Danish plasma physicist.

Pedersen studied applied physics and physical engineering at the Technical University of Denmark in Lyngby from 1990 with a diploma in plasma physics ( Numerical and Theoretical investigations of Resistive Drift Wave Turbulence ) in 1995 . He then worked at Risø DTU near Roskilde and at the Joint European Torus before going to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), where he worked with Robert Granetz and Miklos Porkolab in 2000 on the transport of impurities into the plasma of the tokamak experiment Alcator C-Mod there ( Edge Plasma Phenomena in the Alcator C-Mod Tokamak Measured by High Resolution X-Ray Imaging Diagnostics ). He was then Assistant Professor and, from 2005, Associate Professor at Columbia University , where he designed and built the Columbia Non-Neutral Torus , a stellarator for studying non-neutral plasmas (such as pure electron plasmas and electron-positron plasmas).

In 2010 he became a "Scientific Member" of the Max Planck Society and is head of the Department of Edge and Divertor Physics for Stellarators at the sub-institute of the Max Planck Institute for Plasma Physics (MPP) in Greifswald , where the Wendelstein 7-X stellarator is located.

In 2005 he received a Career Award from the National Science Foundation . In 2011 he became a Fellow of the American Physical Society . In 2017 he received an ERC Advanced Grant from the European Research Council .
