Thomas Thumann
Thomas Thumann (born April 20, 1965 in Neumarkt in der Oberpfalz ) is a German lawyer and politician ( Free Voters / UPW ). Since December 5, 2005 he has been Lord Mayor of the large district town of Neumarkt in the Upper Palatinate . On September 25, 2011, he was confirmed in office with a majority of 68.67% of the votes in the first ballot. His second term began on December 5, 2011.
Life and work
Thumann is the first of three children of the married couple Hans and Gisela Thumann. He grew up in Neumarkt, first in the old town, then later in the Holzheim district .
After graduating from the Ostendorfer-Gymnasium in Neumarkt in 1984 , he did his military service with a tank reconnaissance battalion in Pfreimd and Roding and then studied law at the University of Erlangen . He finished his student days with the first state examination in law. Following his legal clerkship, he passed the second state examination in 1995 and founded a law firm in Pyrbaum near Neumarkt. His areas of expertise included inheritance, criminal and civil law. He also worked as a specialist lawyer for family law.
He is Roman Catholic and has been with the former Neumarkt Christkind Carolin Thumann, born on December 29, 2009. Meier, married. Thumann has a son from a previous relationship.
Political career and offices
Thumann has been a member of the district assembly of the FW / UPW since 2002 and was their candidate for the election of the district administrator in 2002.
After his predecessor moved to the German Bundestag as a member of parliament, Thumann ran for the election of the Lord Mayor of Neumarkt in December 2005. In the first ballot he was elected one of the youngest Lord Mayors of the major district town with 53.59 percent of the vote and took office as the first Lord Mayor since the end of the war who was not from the ranks of the CSU.
In November 2009 Thumann was invited to the City Climate Conference in Hamburg and also took part in the World Climate Summit in November 2009 in Copenhagen .
The city of Neumarkt was named “UNESCO City of the World Decade” three times during his tenure .
Thumann is the parliamentary group leader of the Free Voters / UPW in the district assembly of the Upper Palatinate and also holds this office in the district assembly of the Neumarkt district.
In his role as Lord Mayor, he is also the first director of the volunteer fire brigade of the large district town, as well as a permanent member of the administrative board of Sparkasse Neumarkt-Parsberg.
On September 24, 2017, Thumann was re-elected with almost 70% of the mayor elections in Neumarkt.

In the early 1990s, Thumann was named the Middle Bavarian bodybuilding champion. To this day he has been practicing this sport as a counterbalance to everyday political life.
