The Ostendorfer-Gymnasium (OG) is a linguistic, musical, economic and social science high school in Neumarkt in the Upper Palatinate and a state-recognized UNESCO project school .

history

It was named after the painter and draftsman Michael Ostendorfer (1490–1559), who made numerous woodcuts and book illustrations in the Regensburg area and also worked as a court painter at the court of Frederick II in Neumarkt.

The school is divided into three buildings (A-building since 1972, B-building since 1992, C-building since 1994), which compensate for the growing space requirements. The A-building of the grammar school was completely renovated in 2010 and forms the core of the school. The architecture of the school is characterized by clear shapes and subtle colors. In 2015 the school was brought up to date with media technology so that all classrooms are equipped with a projector, document camera and an internet connection.

Training directions

Linguistic high school

At the linguistic grammar school, the students receive language training. Foreign language teaching also includes contacts abroad, which is why there is an exchange program with partner schools for the students, especially in the language training.

Music high school

The arts gymnasium aims to develop children's musical skills and inclinations. The three subjects of German, music and art education are seen as important, music becomes the core subject. The increased preoccupation with artistic topics is intended to address not only intellectual but also emotional skills. Creativity and imagination are encouraged. In addition, free instrumental lessons are given at the music grammar school. It is not a requirement that the instrument is already being played. At the Ostendorfer Gymnasium, instrumental lessons are given for both beginners and advanced students. The children choose a compulsory instrument. The Ostendorfer-Gymnasium currently offers lessons in various string and wind instruments, as well as piano and organ.

Economics and social science high school

The economics and social science high school aims to give the children the ability to deal with political and social issues independently. One concern is to arouse the willingness in the students to help shape the political and social life of society and to take responsibility for it. Extracurricular internships should help to develop the world of experience of social interaction through engagement in a social institution and to try out social perception and social action.

The last letter

This musical project was again presented to the public on July 14, 2006 in the auditorium of the District Office. The plot is based on a true story and relates to the life of Ilse Haas, who lived in Neumarkt in the 1930s and perished in the Stutthof concentration camp near Strasbourg.

It shows episodes from the last months in the life of the Jewish girl Ilse Goldbach. They are reconstructed on the basis of letters that the young girl Karin finds with her grandmother, who at the time was a maid for the Goldbach family. The letters document the changes in Nazi Germany in the 1930s. They begin with the description of a happy festival and end with the expulsion from Neumarkt. Karin penetrates more and more into the action. Ilse's fate does not let go of her and she is increasingly alienated from her circle of friends. In the last letter she finally learns the whole truth.

The musical met with a great response: the last survivor of the Haas family from the USA visited Neumarkt with his wife for the first time since the end of the war.
