The Thomas Dehler Foundation is a foundation in the Free State of Bavaria that is closely related to the Free Democratic Party (FDP) and is based in Munich .
Foundation and history
It was founded in 1971 as the Thomas Dehler Institute, which was converted into the Thomas Dehler Foundation in 1979. It is named after the FDP politician Thomas Dehler from Franconia . The foundation is the liberal educational institution in Bavaria . As such, it is a political foundation, and the word “liberal” denotes both political and intellectual standpoint.
The foundation works closely with the Bavarian State Office of the Friedrich Naumann Foundation for Freedom in Munich.
Purpose of the foundation
The foundation pursues exclusively and directly charitable purposes. It does not primarily pursue economic purposes. Its task is to conduct political education work on a liberal basis in the Free State of Bavaria. To fulfill this task, the foundation
- Conduct courses, seminars, lectures and other events;
- disseminate and deepen liberal ideas through publications and public relations work;
- Maintain and deepen the contact with the event participants and publication recipients;
- create and maintain a national educational institution;
- cooperate with all Bavarian institutions that are active in the same or similar areas;
- Maintain connections with like-minded institutions and groups outside Bavaria.
The foundation can also work with other non-profit institutions or companies or provide them with financial or material resources, provided this serves to fulfill their tasks.
Foundation assets
The basic assets of the foundation are to be maintained permanently and undiminished. It consists of € 17,500. In addition, there is an entitlement to the Friedrich-Naumann-Foundation for an annual grant in the amount of the budget of the Friedrich-Naumann-Foundation for domestic work, which is partly allocated to Bavaria, which is used to finance the current expenses.

With the Thomas Dehler Prize, the Thomas Dehler Foundation has been honoring a distinguished personality and their services in memory of Thomas Dehler every year since 1985.
