The Liberal Society. Society for Liberal Politics from 1965 e. V. is an association based in Bremen . It is an institution of political education work on a liberal basis and a party-affiliated foundation of the FDP Bremen .

Purpose, goals and offers

The Liberal Society of 1965 e. V. was founded by personalities from Bremen and Bremerhaven with the aim of promoting the readiness of the individual for practical and political commitment to freedom and personal responsibility in modern society through information and discussion. Their exclusive and immediate purpose is to be in liberal spirit

  • to promote upbringing and popular education, tolerance in all areas of civic life and international understanding,
  • to strengthen the understanding of the freedom of the thinking individual,
  • to maintain and increase the rule of law thinking and acting as well as a free state consciousness.

It offers everyone an open discussion and forms independent working groups on the various topics in order to create an overarching joint platform at the end of the open-ended debates, which appears suitable to influence politics in the vital questions of our country.

The Liberal Society was founded in 1965 by senators and other dignitaries from the two cities of Bremen and Bremerhaven as a non-profit registered association. It consists of about fifty members and operates on a liberal basis political advice and adult political education in cooperation with the Friedrich Naumann Foundation for Freedom through seminars, workshops, lectures, discussions and events of all kinds. These events take place in smaller and larger groups in the State of Bremen as well as in the Lower Saxony area mainly in the areas of economy, finance, rule of law, culture as well as social and societal politics. It is a collecting basin and forum especially for the economically thinking and acting middle class. It sees itself as an independent member of the liberal family and is independent of parties.

The Liberal Society finances its events through membership fees, tax-deductible donations, (minor) subsidies from the Bremen budget and (higher) donations from the funds of the Lower Saxony / Bremen regional office of the Friedrich Naumann Foundation for Freedom. The Liberal Society invites well-known and competent personalities, such as members of the Bundestag, ministers and professors, from various areas to its public events. So z. B. from the areas of political philosophy, economics, physics, history, finance and federalism reform. But she also deals with current issues of equality, social policy, environmental protection, the financial, euro and energy crisis, administrative reform, logistics, culture and journalism. The guest was u. a. also Joachim Gauck . The focus is on the theory and practice of freedom, personal responsibility and the social order.

Publications

In 2009, the society developed a brochure on neoliberalism and a memorandum “Economy and Finances in the State of Bremen”, with which it made proposals for maintaining the independence of the Free Hanseatic City of Bremen and its two municipalities by freeing them from the dangerous gap between public over-indebtedness and too weak economic power as well as an activating policy in all fields. The publication is aimed at all people and institutions involved, especially in business and politics, and also calls on all responsible women and men to think along and act together.

Board

The chairman is Horst-Jürgen Lahmann , the deputy chairmen are Georg von Groeling-Müller and Claus Jäger. Members of the board are also Hartmut Zirpel (treasurer) as well as Claudia Kühne (assessor) and Ulf-Brün Drechsel (assessor)
