The emergence of the VL goes back to the decision of the Saarland Landtag on November 5, 1969 to release the Saarbrücker Zeitung from the state and to privatize it again. The newspaper, which was privately founded in 1761 , was integrated into the NSDAP publishing empire in 1935 after the Saar was reintegrated into the German Reich. After the Second World War it was placed under French sequester administration and transferred to Saarland in 1956 on the basis of the Luxembourg Treaty .

The majority shareholder is currently the Rheinische Post Mediengruppe , the minority shareholder with around 28% is the Society for Citizenship Education (GsB). The GsB owns the Union Stiftung e. V., the Democratic Society Saarland e. V. and the Villa Lessing - Liberale Stiftung Saar e. V. at. The VL is financed exclusively from private funds. Tolerance price

The VL awards the Villa Lessing Tolerance Prize for students in the Saarland for each school year. The background and idea behind the Tolerance Prize is to educate the young generation to be tolerant and against any form of extremism , as this is an educational task that is new for each generation. This is exemplified by the repeatedly emerging tendencies towards right-wing and left-wing radical thinking and acting, even in parts of the younger generation. In order to counteract these tendencies and to promote tolerance, paired with moral courage , in the future generations of the Saarland, the Villa Lessing awards the tolerance prize for schoolchildren every year. The prize is awarded for exemplary behavior and projects that promote tolerance and promote tolerance for individual students, groups of students and entire school classes. The decision on the award of the Villa Lessing Tolerance Prize lies with an independent jury.

Europe price

The VL awards the “Villa Lessing European Prize” once a year to students of the European Institute at Saarland University . All students of the Europa-Institut, the Law Section and the Economics Section whose theses deal with developments in law and the economy in Europe and, in particular, the strengthening of freedom and competition in Europe and European integration, can apply on a liberal basis, the strengthening of European civil society and the position of the citizen in the process of European unification.
