Thomas J. Vogl (2016)

Thomas Joseph Vogl (born May 17, 1958 in Munich ) is a German radiologist . He is professor for X-ray diagnostics at the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University in Frankfurt am Main and director of the Institute for Diagnostic and Interventional Radiology at the University Hospital Frankfurt am Main . Vogl is known for his work in the field of interventional oncology, vascular procedures, multidetector CT, MRT, evaluation of contrast media, MR-controlled interventions and artificial intelligence in radiology.

Professional background

Vogl studied human medicine in Munich from 1976 to 1982. In 1980 he worked at the Hebrew University School of Medicine, Hadassah Hospital , Jerusalem. After passing the medical state examination, he received his doctorate in 1983. In the same year he went to the Radiological Clinic at the Großhadern Clinic as a research assistant . In 1988 there was a research stay at Massachusetts General Hospital Boston . He was recognized as a doctor in radiology with specialist knowledge in radiation therapy in 1989 and in nuclear medicine in 1992. In the following year, Vogl received his habilitation and was then appointed senior physician at the Radiation Clinic and Polyclinic of the Free University of Berlin , Rudolf Virchow University Hospital. In 1993 he accepted a professorship for general radiology at the Charité Berlin. In 1996 he was recognized as a neuroradiologist. In 1998 he accepted an appointment as professor for general X-ray diagnostics at the Goethe University in Frankfurt . Vogl has headed the Institute for Diagnostic and Interventional Radiology there since 1998. At the Orthopedic Clinic Foundation Friedrichsheim he took over the management of radiology in cooperation in 2005. In 2005/06 Vogl was a visiting professor at the University of Charleston . Since 2013 he has been the spokesman for the Frankfurt Clinic Alliance and guideline officer for the German Radiological Society. From 2005 to 2010 Vogl was Deputy Medical Director of the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University Hospital in Frankfurt and its clinical director. Since 2020 he has been coordinating the national task force RADCOON, a project to research COVID-19 . Vogl will act as President of the 102nd German X-ray Congress in 2021.

Scientific contribution

The main research areas include abdominal and thoracic diagnostics and intervention , interventional MR tomography , sub-project leader in the Collaborative Research Center Hyperthermia Sfb 1470, digital and three-dimensional imaging processes, MR spectroscopy, MR angiography , new techniques for endoluminal magnetic resonance tomography, imaging diagnostics in the skull base and, Neck region, multidetector computed tomography , breast diagnostics and intervention and laser-assisted vascular ablations . To do this, he uses international contacts to "improve the treatment of liver tumors, for example". The focus of his work is the early detection of malignant tumors and the field of interventional cancer therapy ( oncology ).

Vogl introduced new interventional radiology procedures with his patented laser-induced thermotherapy and chemoembolization technology . He is currently also working on prostate enlargement , for which he is using an experimental therapeutic approach from the last few years (status 2020) with prostate embolization.
