Thomas Wünsch (director)

Thomas Wünsch (* around 1962; † May 28, 2012 ) was a German theater director . He is considered one of the midwives of the open-air operas of the Braunschweig State Theater .

Life

He studied musical theater directing with Götz Friedrich in Hamburg , after which he worked for four years as a research assistant and personal advisor to Friedrich, and was also a lecturer at the University and the University of Music in Hamburg. His first engagement as a director took him to Giessen in 1990 for the “Barber of Seville”. From 1993 to 1997 he was the opera director at Theater Zwickau, since 1996 he has been a freelance director, working all over Germany. Wünsch has staged in Giessen, Braunschweig, Krefeld-Mönchengladbach, Oldenburg, Wiesbaden, Augsburg, at the State Theater of Munich's Gärtnerplatz, at the Eutin Festival and in Kaiserslautern. As a director, he can be attributed to a tendency in directorial theater , which implemented fantastic elements and new interpretive concepts on city theater possibilities. He valued symbolist approaches and strong scenic images, worked with stage designers such as Heiko Mönnich or Thomas Dörfler.

Like his teacher, he paid attention to strict personal management . In addition to working as a freelance director, since 2003 he has held a teaching position for scenic lessons at the Detmold University of Music . His main focus was on Italian opera in the 19th century; by Verdi he staged, for example, “I Masnadieri”, “La Traviata”, “Rigoletto”, “Otello”, “Aida” and “Don Carlo”. Surprisingly, he died in the middle of working on "The Merry Wives of Windsor" at the Detmold Conservatory a heart attack . He died on the night of May 28th to May 29th, 2012.
