Thomas Kühr began his professional career in 1973 in central controlling at Allgemeine Deutsche Philips Industrie GmbH (Alldephi) in Hamburg. At the beginning of 1976 he moved to the Deutsche Wagnisfinanzierungsgesellschaft (WFG) in Frankfurt, which had been founded shortly before by 29 state and private credit institutions in order to develop a venture capital market in Germany. When the number of independent venture capital companies increased in Germany in the early 1980s , he became managing partner of GENES Venture Services GmbH, which specializes in early-stage investments in high technology . In 1984 he was co-founder of the Luxembourg-based company International Venture Capital Partners and in 1986 co-founder of the Eindhoven and Stuttgart-based company Euroventures Germany . In 2005 Georg Schwegler, who had previously headed the T-Com Venture Fund to finance network companies, succeeded him as managing director. Kühr officially resigned for “personal reasons”, but his resignation from the management coincided with a report in Manager Magazin that he had obtained his doctorate at a Swiss letterbox university.

He then founded Equity4Ventures in 2006 to advise small and medium-sized companies and investors in the areas of due diligence , structuring and financing.

In 1998 he co-founded the Düsseldorf-based Venture Capital Forum NRW (today: Private Equity Forum NRW ), which he chaired in 2000 and 2001.
