Thomas Weld
Thomas Weld (born January 22, 1773 in London , † April 10, 1837 in Rome ) was a cardinal of the Catholic Church .
Life
Taught by a Jesuit priest as a private tutor, Weld also attended the Jesuit college in Liège for a year . During the French Revolution , he took care of emigrated priests and especially accepted members of religious orders into his homes. Married to Lucy Bridget Clifford on June 7, 1796, he had a daughter. His wife died on June 1, 1815, and Weld followed the advice of his spiritual director and began studying theology in 1818 . On April 3, 1821 he received in Paris the priesthood , then he was chaplain of the mission in Chelsea and later in Hammersmith .
On May 23, 1826, he was named Titular Bishop of Amiclea and Coadjutor of the Bishop of Kingston , Canada. Even though he received his episcopal ordination on August 6, 1826 in Saint Edmunds College in Herfortshire , he did not leave for his future diocese for various reasons, including the serious illness of his daughter. Finally he went to Rome, where on March 13, 1830 he resigned his office as coadjutor bishop. Thereupon Pope Pius VIII created him on March 15, 1830 as a cardinal priest and on July 5, 1830 awarded him the titular church of San Marcello . He lived in the Palazzo Odescalchi .
From 1833 to 1836 the future Cardinal Antonino De Luca (1805-1883) worked as his private secretary.
He died in Rome and was buried in his titular church, where his daughter and son-in-law rest next to him.
