Thomas Wenner

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Thomas Wenner (* 1947 ) is a German police officer and former police chief of Bochum .

Career

Wenner was police chief in Bochum from 1993 to 2009. In October 2009, at the age of 62, he was given early retirement against his will by the NRW state government at the suggestion of Interior Minister Ingo Wolf . According to media reports, the background to this was allegations of disloyalty to the state government. The police union regretted his dismissal, the police in North Rhine-Westphalia are losing "one of their most distinctive heads". The National Democratic Party of Germany (NPD) in Bochum criticized Wenner for banning several NPD demonstrations and welcomed his retirement.

During his tenure, Wenner was largely responsible for the cancellation of the Love Parade planned in Bochum in 2009 , as he did not consider an event with so many participants to be feasible due to the circumstances. In an open letter, Wenner justified the rejection of criticism from the state government and accused the critics of irresponsibly neglecting security aspects. When the following year in Duisburg there was a serious accident at the Love Parade in 2010 with 21 dead, Wenner's criticism again attracted strong attention. As a result, Wenner filed a complaint against Duisburg's Lord Mayor Adolf Sauerland and other senior Duisburg officials.

Trivia

In 1999 Wenner had a brief media encounter with the punk musician Wolfgang Wendland . During a “punks meeting” in Bochum, he was sent off, against which he lodged a complaint before the administrative court. Wendland's band Die Kassierer therefore later released a song entitled Thomas Wenner on the album Musik für Zwei Ears .

Wenner supported the production of the police report Toto & Harry .
