Thomas Wilbrandt (* 1952 in Bielefeld ) is a German composer and conductor.

Life

He studied with Franco Ferrara , Hans Swarowsky and Bruno Maderna in Rome , Vienna and Salzburg and was Herbert von Karajan's assistant with the Berliner Philharmoniker in Berlin and Salzburg for three years .

In 1980 he founded the Berlin Chamber Academy , an orchestra of 40 musicians who originally consisted of the members of the Berlin Philharmonic. With this ensemble he recorded the highly acclaimed Mozart series for RCA / Victor .

In addition to his activities as an international conductor with important symphony orchestras such as the Berlin Philharmonic and the Philharmonia Orchestra from London, Wilbrandt has increasingly concentrated on his own projects and recordings of his own works, which stylistically can primarily be assigned to the avant-garde and electronic music .

His first major project was "THE ELECTRIC V." from 1984, which is a recording of Vivaldi's Four Seasons as a mixture of acoustic orchestra and electronic instruments. This was also filmed between 1987 and 1990 under the title "THE ELECTRIC V.".

Wilbrandt also composed pieces of music for films on occasion. In particular, "History (Repeats Itself)" from the soundtrack to Natural Born Killers by Oliver Stone should be mentioned.
